This is a story of quiet courage — in elephants, in people, and in the act of turning grief into lasting impact.
After floods struck Elephant Nature Park (ENP) in northern Thailand, former volunteer Nicola Slator reached out to share the heartbreaking news: Faa Sai, one of the sanctuary’s most beloved elephants, was gone.
I sat down to draw — moved by the loss, and quietly daunted by what it meant to capture her. The weight of her story. The presence. The depth behind her eyes.
The portrait that emerged was soft, strong, and full of stillness.
But it wasn’t Faa Sai. I’d drawn Mintra — another rescued soul at ENP.
The mix-up was unintentional, but honest. And it gave the portrait something deeper.
What began as a tribute to one elephant became a portrait honouring two — one in form, one in spirit.
The title was Nicola’s.
Unwritten Courage — a nod to Faa Sai, who turned back toward her herd in the rising floodwaters. She didn’t survive, but her choice stays with us.
It also speaks to the sanctuary that sheltered her, and to those who keep showing up — steady, determined, and often unseen.
This artwork began in grief. Now, it stands for healing.
By choosing it, you’re helping to protect the elephants still standing after the storms — and carrying their story forward.
